Doesn't sound too good. I've not used Vista myself so I can't really say whether you are alone with your troubles. My only experience with it was trying to fix a work-friend's screwed up laptop so can't judge it on that.

Hasn't Windows always moved icons/widgets due to third party apps changing the resolution? It seems that my current XP setup isn't doing that but I do remember it happening quite a bit in the past - tho perhaps not in XP?

Regarding the boot progress, I'd imagine there isn't a way of them doing that without inviting the hordes to scream about copying Apple. I suppose the MS-way is for troubleshooting to be done via booting in safe mode which used to list drivers loaded up to a point.

Windows has always done that, true, but isn't the point of a new and improved OS that they improve on the last one(s)?

Why should anyone be afraid of being accused of copyiong someone, if that someone is doing it right in the first place? (as long as its not patented, but lets steer away from that can'o'worms).
